“I've loved reading these updates! It's incredible to see the lives we've created for ourselves since graduating 12 years ago (how has it been that long). After leaving Walton, I went to Clemson (Go Tigers) and loved every minute! At Clemson, I studied Secondary Education with an emphasis on history. When I graduated, I joined Teach For America and taught in a small town called Lake City, South Carolina. I wore various hats outside of being a teacher, but one that I loved was coaching the middle school football team. I think we won a total of six games in three years, so I figured it was time to hang up my whistle. The best part about Lake City was meeting my now wife, Hollie. We taught at the same school, the same subject, and the same grade level #TeachForALoveStory. I was lucky enough to have a few Raiders stand next to me at my wedding (Jeff Cheek, Jacob Blaeser, & Sam Blount). We moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, where she attended the University of Tennessee law school. I worked as an Instructional Coach for the school district and focused on increasing access to gifted programming for underrepresented groups of students. I earned my Master's in Educational Leadership and thought I wanted to be a principal (there's still time), but we ended up moving to Nashville, where I am now a Director at a non-profit with a mission of diversifying the teaching force to ensure that every student has access to an excellent teacher. Hollie and I have a 3-year-old dog named Wilkins! He's the best! Let me know if you're ever in Nashville and need a place to stay or a tour guide! I'm really proud of you all, and reading your stories fills me with joy! Go Raiders!” — Matt Cheek
